Author: Patrick on May 16, 2012

When on the subject of social networking, it is hard to discuss it without mentioning Facebook. As it stands, Facebook is simply the most popular social networking website on the planet. Sadly, the same can’t be said with regards to its official iOS app. With every new update, it seems that the developers have the knack to break things, introduce new bugs or change something that doesn’t need to be changed. The Facebook iOS app is currently rated 2 stars over at iTunes which reflects the frustration of millions of its users. So why is the official Facebook app for iOS is less than stellar?

The folks over at Mobtest blog took the liberty of digging around the Facebook iOS app in order to find out why it is riddled with problems when the web version doesn’t have any issues whatsoever. First they determined what exactly are the problems of Facebook:

So what is wrong with the Facebook iOS app?

App is slow

Inconsistent information. Notification icons say there are new messages or responses, actual window does not show anything new.

App is slower than mobile web site. While everybody is used to speedy apps, the Facebook mobile web site is faster than iOS app, and offers almost the same functionality.

Tons of other bugs. Scrambled views, photo upload, text boxes disappear, no sharing.

The post from Mobtest itself can be a little too technical but the gist of it is that the Facebook app uses HTML for the timeline feature. But in order to display the HTML inside the app, UIWebView is utilized. But the problem is that UIWebView itself is rather slow which is quite evident in the app because it doesn’t have access to the Nitro JavaScript engine, which is present in Mobile Safari. Thus explaining why the web version is faster than the iOS app.

So why is Facebook using HTML inside its iOS app? This is because HTML is good for displaying fluid content. HTML also creates a code that can be shared on many different platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows Phone and more. In addition to that, HTML is more in line with Facebook’s continuous deployment procedure.

FB developers are responsible for their own QA, and part of that is to push code out to a limited set of servers, see results and then push it out to more and do this each day if not more often. With Apple taking as least a week of review, rolling back a code change is a nightmare.

So there you go, the technical factors why the Facebook iOS app is so slow and unusable. For a more detailed analysis, head over to Mobtest blog.

Over the past weeks, world famous security researcher Pod2g has been very busy and we all know that it is because he is now close to releasing the next big untethered jailbreak. For the course of many weeks now, Pod2g has been keeping the jailbreak community in the loop regarding his works. In case you are wondering which devices are supported by the new iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak, Pod2g has released on official list. Check it out after the jump.

Pod2g posted an official post on his blog that lists the devices which will be supported / unsupported by the new jailbreak. Check out below the list of devices supported by the upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak Supported Devices:

iPhone 4

iPhone 4S

iPad 1

iPad 2 Wifi

iPad 3 Wifi

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak Unsupported Devices:

iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom)

iPod 3G

AppleTV 3

Devices Lined Up for Testing:

iPod 4G

iPad 2 GSM

iPad 2 CDMA

iPad 2 Wifi, R2

iPad 3 CDMA

iPad 3 Global

AppleTV 2

It is worth pointing out that the iPhone 3GS that is listed above is a new bootrom model. Old bootrom iPhone 3GS is already untethered jailbroken by default because it will always be vulnerable to 24Kpwn exploit. If you have a new bootrom iPhone 3GS, then it seems that you are out of luck. Devices that are lined up for testing are still unconfirmed for the moment but we figure Pod2g should post an update soon enough once he’s done with the testing phase.

The upcoming jailbreak was initially for iOS 5.1 but Pod2g was able to test it on the latest iOS 5.1.1 firmware and it worked without issues. The jailbreak has been tested to work on A5 devices as well which means that owners of newer devices can now rest easy. ETA for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak is still unconfirmed but it should be close enough. [via Pod2gBlog]

Author: Patrick on May 16, 2012

While the upcoming WWDC is not expected to reveal anything significant in terms of hardware (especially not a new iPhone), it doesn’t mean that there will be a shortage of rumors and speculations regarding the upcoming 6th generation iPhone. When it comes to reports about the specifications of the new iPhone, certainly one of the most popular aspects is the screen. Here’s another report stating that Apple is set to release a 4-inch screen iPhone.

Citing the ever-familiar “people familiar with the matter” sources, The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has already placed orders for larger screens to its Asian suppliers. The alleged larger screen will measure at least four inches diagonally and is clearly larger than that of the current and older iPhone models, the sources told. In case you don’t know, ever since the original iPhone, the screen has always featured a 3.5-inch diagonal display. But it seems that Apple is about to make history once the upcoming iPhone with a larger display will be announced.

Production for the iPhones with larger displays is to kickstart in next month and much like previous reports indicated, it will hit the market this coming fall, much like with the iPhone 4S. According to the sources, Apple has partnered with several screen makers which include South Korea’s LG Display Co., Japan’s Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc.

If anyone can recall earlier this month, South Korean company Samsung just unveiled their newest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III boasting a sizable 4.8-inch display and considered to be one of the largest smartphone screens in the market. If Apple is indeed going for a larger screen for the next iPhone, will it be because of the pressure that the competition applies? Or will it be because Apple is set to appease its fans who have been clamoring for larger screen for quite some time now? Or perhaps a 4-inch screen iPhone is the next sensible, evolutionary upgrade for Apple’s smartphone line? [via TheWSJ]

When it comes to web browsers, there is very little doubt that Google’s Chrome Browser is certainly one of the best ones. Combining Google’s no-nonsense approach to its interface and of course there’s the blazing fast speed of the browser itself. And now avid Chrome users are in for a treat because Google just launched version 19 of its ever popular browser for Windows, Mac and Linux to its mainstream stable release channel.

So what can you expect from Chrome 19? As per usual, you can expect various bug fixes and performance enhancements but certainly the core addition to this build is certainly Tab Syncing. With this new feature, Chrome users will be able to effortlessly sync the tabs they have opened across all their devices which includes tablets and Android phones that run the Ice Cream Sandwich-only Chrome for Android beta.

Let’s say you are browsing on your computer and decided to leave and have to end your session, with Tab Syncing you can easily pickup your browsing session on any other supported platform of Chrome. You will just need to sign-in on Chrome using your Google Account. Another neat thing that is worth noting is that this new feature will also save your browsing history which means that even your back and forward buttons will work as well. Check out the video below to understand more about Tab Syncing:

Again, you will need to sign-in on your Google Account so you can take advantage of the new Tab Syncing feature along with other syncing features such as bookmarks, apps, history, themes, extensions and so on. Chrome 19 is now officially live although the new Tab Syncing feature is said to rollout over the coming weeks.

So update your browser to Chrome 19 now and enjoy the latest stable release. [via GoogleBlog]

Author: Kees on May 15, 2012

One of the best advantages of a jailbroken iPhone you can have is that you are able to install SAM on iOS 5.1.1. This package enables you to unlock your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. If you already managed to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 5.1.1, then you can install SAM straight away on iOS 5.1.1. Besides the unlocking, you can use SAM also to fix push notification on iOS 5.1.1 and fix Youtube error on iOS 5.1.1 as well.

Follow the instructions below and you are able to install SAM on iOS 5.1.1 to unlock your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS.

Step-By-Step Procedure on How to Install SAM on iOS 5.1.1

Before you begin, you need a jailbroken iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. You can do this by following the instructions on how to jailbreak iPhone on iOS 5.1.1 in these articles via Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze.

When you already have a jailbroken iDevice, or you proceeded the previous step successfully, you can launch Cydia from the springboard. On the homepage, tap on the ‘Manage’ tab. You can find this at the bottom of the screen.

On the next screen you will have several choices. Tap on the large button which says ‘Sources’.

On the screen that follows, tap the ‘edit’ button on the top right of your screen. After that, tap the ‘Add’ button that will appear in the next screen in the top left portion.

A screen will appear, asking you to enter the Cydia/APT URL. You need to type: http://repo.bingner.com. To finish up, tap the ‘Add Source’ button.

Cydia will now automatically start updating. When Cydia is done with the update, tap the ‘return to Cydia’ button at the bottom.

Tap on the ‘search’ tab and type ‘SAM’ in the searchfield.

Find ‘SAM’ in the search results and tap on the button ‘Install’. This button is located on the top right of your screen. After this the installation will start automatically.

If the installation is finished, you can restart your iDevice or just restart the Springboard.

Next step is to insert your NEW SIM card. The display will say ‘no service’ for now. On your springboard you will find the application ‘SAMPrefs’.

Tap on the app ’utilities’. In the next screen, tap on the button which says ‘De-Activate iPhone’. If everything went well, you can find the ActivationState ‘Unactivated’ on the ‘more information’ screen.

While SAM is enabled, tap ‘Method’ and change the setting from ‘Auto Detect’ to ‘By Country and Carrier’.

Go back one step on the SAM menu and tap ‘Country’. After this, choose the country of the ORIGINAL SIM.

Again one step back in the menu and tap on ‘Carrier’. In the next screen, select the ORIGINAL carrier which the iPhone is locked to.

Once again one step back in the menu. If your carrier has more than one carrier-ID, select SIM ID.

Now you can navigate to the screen ‘More Information’ and copy the IMSI which you can find under the text ‘SAM Details’. Next step is to tap on the button ‘Spoof Real SIM to SAM’.

Now you can return to SAM’s main menu and paste the IMSI number you copied in step 16.

In this step you can connect your iPhone with your computer and start iTunes. iTunes will proceed to re-activate your iPhone. Double-click on ‘Phone Number’. Here you must check if the ICCID matches with the one of your SIM-card. If there is not a match, you must go back in the process and re-do step 10.

Disconnect your device from the computer and quit iTunes. On your iPhone, launch SAMPrefs from your springboard and disable SAM through the ‘Enabled’ switch.

Now again connect your iPhone with the computer and launch iTunes again. If everything is fine, you should see the message ‘failure to activate’. Don’t panic! This is normal. Just quit iTunes and launch it again.

After a few minutes, when everything is done the right way, you should be able to see signal bars.

Fix Push Notifications After installing SAM on iOS 5.1.1

If, after performing all these steps, Push Notifications don’t work, you can restore that by using the ‘Clear Push Utility’ in SAM. After that, you just need to connect to iTunes.

That’s all folks! Lot of steps to do! But if you do this well, the reward will be good! You should now know everything on how to install SAM on iOS 5.1.1.

Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference is just a few weeks away and while we can’t expect a new hardware announcement, there is very little doubt about iOS 6 announcement. There have been reports that in iOS 6, Google Maps will be dropped by Apple and will be replaced by the company’s in-house solution called Maps. And now a new report indicates that the upcoming iOS 6 beta is currently being tested for software compatibility.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, a developer has contacted them after noticing that users running the upcoming iOS 6 firmware have been using his app. The developer came across this information after collecting OS version using an analytics software. The developer wasn’t able to trace exactly when the iOS 6 users have started appearing on his logs but it was speculated that it was sometime over the past week. This basically indicates that the Cupertino company is currently on the process of testing iOS 6 compatibility with various high-profile App Store applications.

From 9to5Mac:

One app developer informed us today that it has recently noticed users running iOS 6 using its app. The developer observed the “iOS6? string when collecting the OS version from analytics software. It has not been able to trace exactly when the iOS 6 users started appearing, but it was sometime over the past week. Other developers that we spoke to began seeing hits in late April.

This is yet another sign that Apple will finally pull the curtains and shed some light into its upcoming iOS firmware upgrade. There isn’t much is known about iOS 6 except for the rumored new Maps app and its 3D capability. Last year, Apple managed to squeeze in about 200+ new features for iOS 5. We’re sure that for this year, fans and the media alike can’t wait to see what new features and upgrades will iOS 6 have.

Author: Kees on May 14, 2012

After recent firmware update, it is normal for jailbreakers and unlockers to wonder if they should upgrade to the latest firmware or wait till the Dev-Teams gives green light to be able to unlock iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 4S. Of course, iDevice users who don’t have the intention to jailbreak or unlock their iDevice, should not hesitate to do so. But what about the users who like to jailbreak or unlock their iDevice?

AppleNBerry has the answer for that question. They announced a few days ago that if you are using the GEVEY Ultra S GSM to unlock iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1, it is safe to update to the newest firmware. They have also confirmed via tweet on their official tweet-account that iPhone 4S unlock on iOS 5.1.1 is possible now, using the GEVEY Ultra S.

One of the biggest features of using the GEVEY Ultra S is the fact that a jailbreak is not necessary. A relief for many users, because in the eyes of some users, a jailbreak is something ‘scary’ to do. But in reality there is no reason to be afraid of jailbreaking, but never mind for now. For the GEVEY Ultra S, a jailbreak is not needed.

What is GEVEY Ultra S and How to Unlock iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 4S?

GEVEY Ultra S is a special SIM card that enables you to unlock iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1.1 without the hassle of jailbreaking. It also has the big advantage that the card is engineered to improve the signal strength for a strong and consistent voice and data connection.

For more information about the GEVEY Ultra S, you can read all about it in one of our posts we published a few weeks ago: Unlock iPhone Baseband 2.0.10 on iOS 5.1 Using GEVEY Ultra S.

The use of the Gevey Ultra S to unlock iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 4S is very easy: Replace the original SIM card by the GEVEY SIM, fire up your iPhone and within minutes your iDevice is unlocked, without the need of jailbreaking! Like this you can always benefit the latest firmware and features, without the need to wait for a green light from the Dev-Teams. Cool ah?

So, if you are already a happy user of the GEVEY Ultra S, there is really no need to wait. You can update your iDevice to iOS 5.1.1 without any worries. If you don’t use the GEVEY Ultra S yet, check out the website of AppleNBerry and buy one to unlock iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 4S now!

Many readers want to know more about Installous and how to install Installous on iOS 5.1.1 to eventually install cracked or jailbroken apps on their iDevices. Well, it is not that hard to do. This how-to guide will tell you step-by-step how to do that.

Installous is a genius application that allows you to download nearly every application from the official Apple App-Store… FOR FREE! But beware, this can be illegal in many cases and can only be used at your own risk. See also the disclaimer at the end of this article.

But wait! that’s not all: You are also able to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. Question is: Why would you want to do that? There are many amazing apps that were not approved by Apple because of direct competition. Most of those apps are really awesome and worth installing.

Requirements to Install Installous on iOS 5.1.1

Open Cydia

Click on the button ‘Sources’

Type the following source in the field: http://cydia.hackulo.us

In the search-tab, type ‘Installous’

Tap on Installous, and install button

Confirmation of the installation

Cydia will now download and install Installous on iOS 5.1.1

Once finished, tap on the button ‘Return to Cydia’

Now you are finished! You will find Installous on one of your home-screens. Was easy ah?

How to Install Cracked Apps on iOS 5.1.1

Ok, Installous is downloaded and installed. But what to do now? This next step-by-step guide will show you how to install cracked apps on iOS 5.1.1. As an example, we took the popular game ‘Angry Birds’.

First of all, open Installous and search for ‘Angry Birds’

Once found, tap on download.

Select the source to download from.

Installous will open a browser window to download the cracked app from a source on the Internet. Probably you need to enter a Captcha to start the download.

The locations on different file-servers look different. Here is an example of this. Avoid the ads, since they will bring you to another webpage and disturbing the process.

After you navigated to the download-section successfully, the window will close and the download of ‘Angry Birds’ will begin.

After the download, you will be notified when it is completed.

When completed, tap on the downloaded application and select ‘install’ from the download menu.

That’s all. You are finished installing your first application.

Disclaimer

Jaxov does not condone the piracy of Apps. Installous should be used for App trials. If you really like the App, support the developers who worked hard for it and pay for it! Also keep in mind that in many countries it is considered illegal to use installous to download and install cracked apps on iOS 5.1.1 or other versions. Use installous, and its features, at your own risk.

Now you know exactly how to install Cracked Apps and how to install Installous on iOS 5.1.1.

Author: Patrick on May 13, 2012

As you may be aware already, Apple has already released iOS 5.1.1 which is the latest firmware version as of now. In terms of changes and features, there is not much that the latest iOS version can offer but in case you have updated to it, then you will want to save your SHSH blobs, especially when it was confirmed by Pod2g that his upcoming jailbreak works without a hitch on iOS 5.1.1. But in order to save your SHSH blobs, you will need a tool. One of the most popular tools around that is used for this purpose is TinyUmbrella, which just received an update to support saving of iOS 5.1.1 SHSH blobs. TinyUmbrella for iOS 5.1.1 is now available for Windows and Mac.

TinyUmbrella developer @notcom just announced a few hours ago that his popular tool has been updated to support iOS 5.1.1. So if you are currently in iOS 5.1.1, it is highly recommended that you save your SHSH blobs now. SHSH blobs + APTickets are the prerequisites if one wants to downgrade to older firmware versions of iOS 5. As mentioned earlier, now that Pod2g has confirmed that iOS 5.1.1 works with his upcoming jailbreak, it would be wise to save your SHSH blobs now using TinyUmbrella. The release of the new untethered jailbreak itself is quite close now (a few more weeks), so waste no more time.

In addition to that, now that the latest version of Redsn0w supports the downgrade of A5/A5X devices, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 owners are encouraged to save their SHSH blobs. This is to ensure a smooth downgrade procedure in case you require it. Download TinyUmbrella 5.11.00 to save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs for Mac and Windows using the links provided below.

A short while ago ‘notcom‘ announced in a tweet that TinyUmbrella will be updated soon to save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs. This tweet indicates clearly that we can expect the update of TinyUmbrella very soon; An update that will allow you to save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs.

Since the release of iOS 5.1.1, the waiting is for Notcom to release an update of this extremely popular tool. This update is now announced in the following tweet of @notcom:

We all know how important it is to save your SHSH Blobs to keep the possibility to downgrade your iDevice for Jailbreaking. But for the newbies a small explanation:

Why should I Save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs?

SHSH stands for Signature HaSH. This is a 128 bit signature used by Apple to keep track of your iDevice and is the key to restoring and upgrading your iDevice. Each time you try to restore or upgrade your iDevice, Apple reads and compares the blobs to verify that you are not downgrading your iDevice. So, if you accidentally upgraded your iDevice to iOS 5.1.1 and you want to go back afterwards and perform a downgrade: That is where TinyUmbrella comes in!

Saving your blobs allows you to downgrade your iDevice to a lower firmware version. Being able to do this can be useful for a lot of reasons, but the most important one being if you accidentally upgrade to a firmware version that cannot be jailbroken. By default, Apple doesn’t allow you to downgrade the firmware.

TinyUmbrella to Save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs Coming soon!

So, while iOS 5.1.1 has already seen the light, the big wait now is for Notcom to release his TinyUmbrella update enabling us to save iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs.
